Milk teeth start erupting at the age of 6 months.
Usually lower central incisors erupt first , at the age of  6 months.
Total no. of milk teeth are 20 in number .
They are INCISORS [8 in number - 4 upper + 4 lower.]
CANINES [4 in number -upper left + upper right + lower left +lower right
MOLARS [ 8 in number -2 upper left + 2 upper  right  + 2 lower left + 2 lower right .
Total number of permanent teeth are 32.
That means 20 milk teeth are replaced by 20 permanent teeth and  12 permanent teeth erupt without replacing any teeth.
At the age of 6 years first permanent molar erupt without replacing any tooth.
There are 8 INCISORS [2 upper left + 2upper right + 2  lower left + 2 lower right -- they are called central incisors and lateral incisors.]They erupt at the age of   6 yrs to 7 yrs.
There are 4 CANINES [ Upper left + upper right + lower left + lower right .]They erupt at the age of 9 to 11 yrs .

8 PREMOLAR [ 2 upper left + 2 upper right + 2 lower left + 2 lower right  . They are called 1st and 2nd premolars ] They erupt at the age of 9 to 11 yrs .
12 MOLARS [ 3 upper left + 3 upper right +3 lower left + 3 lower right -- they are called 1st , 2nd , 3rd molars --3rd molar is also called as Wisdom tooth . ]
2nd molar erupt at the age of 10 to 12 yrs . Wisdom tooth erupts at the age of 18 to 25 yrs .

Up to two yrs of age all the milk teeth gets erupted .
From 2yrs to 6 yrs it is a period of milk dentition .
At the age of 6 yrs  first permanent molar erupts .
From 6 yrs to 12 yrs all milk teeth will get replaced one by one by permanent teeth . This is mixed dentition period .
From 12 yrs onwards all permanent teeth except wisdom teeth are erupted . This is permanent dentition period .

The most common disease of milk teeth is cavity . It is a defect in the enamel & / or dentine.
It looks like black brown spot on the tooth.
There is no pain .
Fillings can be done in tooth colour material (composite resin ) with light cure technology.
If cavity is not filled  in enamel it will grow deeper and reach layer of dentine.
When it comes to dentine tooth shows sensitivity to hot and cold .
Pain disappears immediately after removal of stimulus.
Fillings are possible.

When cavity is present in enamel or dentine ,filling can be done .
Fillings are done in tooth colour filling material (composite resin or glass ionomer  ) with light cure technology .
These aesthetic fillings are almost impossible to make out in the mouth.
They give good service over a period of years  and have replaced old silver fillings totally.

If cavity is not filled in the layer of dentine it grows deeper and reaches pulp.
If it grows rapidly [called ACUTE REACTION ]  pain goes on increasing in duration [1 sec. to 2sec. to 5 10 . ] and ultimately there is continuous pain .
If it grows slowly [called CHRONIC REACTION ] there is no pain or occasional sensation or patient may come with swelling, it may or may not be associated with pain.
When decay reaches pulp ,pain goes on increasing in duration and ultimately there is continuous pain.
Medicines may not work properly
Focus of infection will not go with medicines .
Infection may come again if initial treatment is only medicines .
If tooth is not treated in time it will go on breaking .
Such a tooth can not be saved and needs to be removed since it is infected .

If milk tooth is removed then adjacent permanent teeth will start tilting and try to close the space . As a result erupting permanent tooth will not come in proper place because of lack of space .
If milk molar tooth is removed before age of 8 yrs then permanent tooth (premolar) eruption will be delayed( since permanent tooth has to erupt through thick bone) it will give chance for adjacent teeth to tilt more and increases the complication
When milk tooth is lost biting efficiency is reduced . It is growing age so growth of a child may get affected indirectly .
If milk teeth are lost prematurely then chances of crowded permanent teeth increases .
It is difficult to maintain good oral hygiene due to crowded teeth and chances of cavity formation in permanent teeth increases .

To prevent  problems in permanent teeth regular dental check ups are necessary .
Ideally first dental check up should be done when first milk tooth erupts .
At this stage parents should get consulting about oral hygiene and dietary habits of their child.
Regular dental check up at 3 to 6 months should be scheduled .
Fluoride applications are advised at proper age , it will PREVENT cavities .
At regular check up if any small cavity is found , it is filled . So it PREVENTS further loss . Future root canal or space maintainer is thus avoided .
Deep cavities are treated with root canal with filling . Sometimes crowns are required to strengthen the tooth. So extraction and space maintainer is PREVENTED .

If tooth needs to be removed then space maintainer is given . It will PREVENT future crowding of teeth .
Functional space maintainer can help if biting is affected due to loss of teeth .
if teeth are not coming in proper position then early treatment (interception ) can PREVENT  future problems .
Cross bite ( lower teeth erupting outside and upper inside ) can be corrected very easily at early stage . When teeth develops fully in cross bite it takes long time to correct .
Sometimes milk teeth are removed purposely so that permanent teeth will come in proper position .

R.C.T. can relieve pain immediately.
In R.C.T. canal in the root ( where infection is present ) is cleaned and filled to give air tight seal , so that infection should not come back again.
R.C. treated tooth needs strength since it has become brittle.
To prevent fracture of the tooth internal and /or external reinforcement is required.
Internal reinforcement is done in tooth colour composite resin with bonding technique.
External reinforcement is a crown.

Nursing caries is a disease of milk teeth which show multiple decayed teeth and decay occurring very rapidly .
This decay is due to faulty feeding habits and faulty oral hygiene maintenance . Parents have neglected child showing to the dentist .
Full mouth treatment is required which include fillings , root canal treatment , fluoride applications , if required extractions and space maintainers .
Regular check ups at 3 months duration , correction of dietary habits and proper oral hygiene maintenance are very essential.
